Today, Sherwood boasts a piano faculty of 22 highly trained music educators, most of whom also maintain active careers as performers.

Special Pianopalooza! classes for adults and teens are:

Piano Intensives (five evenings for one week) - Jump-start playing
the piano!

This is a class for beginning adult students with no prior experience, concentrated over five evenings. Each evening includes a group class, 60-minute individual lesson, and an hour of individual practice time. Concludes with a short recital by the participants.

Piano Maintenance and Purchase Workshop - highly recommended for anyone contemplating the purchase of a piano!

Saturday, July 8, 2-4 pm OR Tuesday, August 15, 6-8 pm

What’s really underneath the lid of a piano? Explore how pianos are constructed, how to maintain a piano, and how to purchase a piano - from upright to concert grand. Participants will also learn how pianos are tune, and have the opportunity to tune a string themselves.

Piano Ensemble (3 weeks)

For those playing at the intermediate or higher level. Learn and perform literature for piano duet (four-hands or two pianos), and
other combination. Enjoy playing this rich repertoire in a collaborative and rich environment. Students will be assigned duo partners, although pre-formed duets are welcome to participate, too.

Improvisation for Pianists (6 weeks)

For intermediate pianists who want to explore improvisation. Harmonize melodies, explore syncopation and swing, melodic embellishments, lead sheets and “fake” books. Ability to read
music is required.

Beginning Piano for Older Adults (7 weeks)

Remaining active physically, intellectually and socially are key ingredients to healthy living and aging well. This beginning level class will encompass the therapeutic effect of keeping fingers and hands active, retaining hand/eye coordination, and the satisfaction that
comes with learning a new skill in a group setting. We will cover keyboard orientation, beginning music reading skills, melodies,
rhythm, and basic chords. Age 55 and above.

Special Pianopalooza! classes for Children are:

Keyboard Adventures (ages 5-7)

AND

Keyboard Kickoff (ages 8 - 11)

(8 week classes)

These age-appropriate group classes are an ideal way for children to try out the piano and build the foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students will learn keyboard orientation, beginning music reading skills and simple melodies. These classes are taught in Sherwood’s state-of-the-art keyboard lab.

SHERWOOD CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC - Founded in 1895 by William Hall Sherwood (1854-1911), a protégé of the great composer
of Franz Liszt, Sherwood offers group and individual instruction in 15 instruments and voice. Certified by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, the school trains beginning, intermediate, and advanced musicians of all ages, preschool children and parents, and gifted young musicians who anticipate careers in music. Sherwood students come from nearly every neighborhood in Chicago, the surrounding suburbs and Northwest Indiana. The Main School serves about 1000 families annually, and another 300 students are served through off-site programs coordinated with the Chicago Public Schools, the South Shore Cultural Center, Gallery 37 and community centers. Through the generosity of individual, foundation and corporate donors to Sherwood, no student pays more than 80% of the cost of instruction. Many pay less and some pay nothing at all through either merit-based scholarship or need-based financial assistance, or both.
