Flood of Stupidity Drowns the IMAX Film Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs at the Museum of Science and Industry ![]() Dr. Zahi Hawass the Head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities for Egypt is Man worth Listening too, not Muzzling, like the film does. © Suburban Journals of Chicago photo Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs review by Ed Vincent I have been going to the IMAX at the Museum of Science and Industry for decades and the films though short are generally grand in their visual impressions and mostly have a reasonable, if not educational script. "Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs" is the most offensive creation against science, perhaps since the trial of Galileo. The photography is nice, clear, crisp and colorful. The history and preparation of the dead is presented with useful investigation. The parts where the film goes off the wall with baloney and irony are two main actions. In one of the affronts to good taste and political suicide the makers of the film present Egyptologists Bob Brier and Dr. Zahi Hawass. The honorable Zahi Hawass is an Egyptologist educated in the United States and is in charge of all aspects of archaeology in Egypt. He is shown in the film talking, but his words are not allowed to be heard, in place of his speaking is background music and narration by the producer of the film. This is only the first slap in the face to head of Egypt's antiquities. Dr. Hawass has either had questions from foolish evangelicals wanting to know about the exodus noted in the Bible, or another popular question asked by other sub-saharan Africans who want to know if blacks built the pyramids and if Cleopatra was black. In each case Dr. Hawass has made it quite clear that the exodus of the Bible is more of a myth than a fact and that Egyptians are not blacks and have never been blacks. Cleopatra was a Greek who ruled Egypt, and was not black. Right winged Christians hold that Moses led his people to freedom from the grips of Rameses II, who ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1212 B.C. The science here is one that would require the Jews to have been working on the great pyramids during the time of Rameses II when they were already built a thousand years ago by Egyptians. “Really, it’s a myth (Exodus),” Dr. Hawass has said over and over again, but in this film they say it is true and essentially gag the most famous man in Egypt today. The film is a joke without a funny ending or even a laugh. The little science that is in the film is lost in the flood of stupidity. ![]() The Tomb entrance to Pharoah Tut Ankh Amon (Tutankhamun)early in the morning in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt. © Oak Park Journal photo ![]() ![]() © Oak Park Journal published by Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. |
