UPDATE to Story November 15th

November 14, 2007

Sue McMahon Killed by the Accident

report update by Ed Vincent

Mr. Michael L. Cessna, 23, and from Aurora, Illinois
has had his bond set at $200,000 by a Cook County
Circuit Court judge in Maybrook. His next day to
appear in court is also set for this coming Friday,
November 16th.

Reports have revealed that
Mr. Michael L. Cessna had
his drivers license revoked in December of 2005
following a conviction in DuPage County for Driving
Under the Influence. He has not been able to legally
drive since that time, and with that apparent lack of
respect for our laws it is a good thing that he is no
longer driving our streets.

report by Ed Vincent

Mr. Michael L. Cessna was served an arrest warrant
and brought into the Village of Oak Park this past
Tuesday night (
November 13th). He was found in
Lisle, Illinois and taken into custody by Oak Park
Police Officers. The accident, bringing about
his arrest, happened nearly two months ago and many
are still wondering why it has taken so long to
file any charges in this case.

There has been no evidence or news on the extended
delay in test results, unless there was more work
required due to procedures in either obtaining the
evidence or in analyzing the samples submitted.

Witnesses following the accident, that ultimately took
the life of a cherished Oak Park employee, Ms. Sue
McMahon spoke to us about the unusual facial expressions
on the man right after the accident, even before police
had arrived on the scene. The janitor of one of the
buildings noted that he was told the man looked as though
he was high on some drug and not drunk. The charges
against the alleged driver, Mr. Michael L. Cessna, did
not state a given drug or alcohol % of blood.

This accident had the most serious of outcomes, the
loss of life of a totally innocent person. Charges of
driving on a revoked license, failure to exercise due
care in lane usage, and several counts of aggravated
driving under the influence at first seemed trivial.

They are not as trivial as they sound, there are lesser
offenses that are apparent, but two counts of aggravated
driving under the influence (the second charge coming
from the the fact that the individual was driving with
a revoked license). If the first revocation of his
driving was from a DUI that will add to the severity
of the charges, and with death added there could
a decade or more in jail at the end of the line for
this young man, if he is found guilty of all charges.

His bond hearing was the other morning at 9:00am in
Maybrook.

Driver charged in death of Oak Park resident, Village employee

A 23-year-old Aurora man has been charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence in connection with an automobile crash that claimed the life of an Oak Park resident and long-time Village municipal employee.

Michael L. Cessna was arrested Tuesday night after a lengthy police investigation, which included a traffic crash reconstruction and analysis of evidence by the State Police Crime Lab.

The 1990 Buick Riviera he was driving struck Susan J. McMahon, 62, as she stood near her car in the 300 block of Wisconsin Avenue, at about midday on Sept. 16. She died of the injuries sustained from the crash two days later at Loyola Medical Center.

Cessna is being held in Oak Park pending a bond hearing today in Cook County Circuit Court.

McMahon had lived in Oak Park for 30 years and worked for the Village for nearly 20 years, mostly as a secretary to the Village Clerk.
