The Nissan truck on the right was the first vehicle to be hit on Wisconsin, the Chevy Impala then hit the other compact car next, on the left.  How much of the this higher speed drama was the result of an apparent crash with a hit and run driver on Washington has not been decided.

Today (5/3/08) shortly before two in the afternoon a vehicle
with a female driver and several children (one an infant) was traveling northbound on Wisconsin Ave.  The driver, failing
to observe the sign, which indicated a right turn only at Washington Boulevard, continued northbound ignoring the sign.

Another vehicle driving down Washington Boulevard made contact with the woman’s car at an unknown speed.  The woman’s car appears to have been hit near the front and continued north, apparently first crashing into a parked
mail carrier’s small truck, and then with enough speed
perhaps of her own crossing to the other side of the street, hitting another parked car.

The car, which made contact with her, did not stop and continued driving down Washington Boulevard, leaving the scene of the accident.  An Illlinois plate was recovered on Washington Boulevard at the scene of the reported contact.  Police called in the plate and are expecting to interview its owner.

Unofficial reports of the injury to the woman driver and her children appear to be minor injuries, as the Oak Park Fire Department ambulance remained on the scene with most
of the injured inside.  A small child was brought from the ambulance to meet with a relative, but the relative was not allowed to speak to the driver.

Driving defensively should be a high priority when behind the wheel, but so, too, should obeying the traffic signs and laws.

The Intial impact damage shown here was from the Nissan truck that was hit after the hit and run driver on Washington.  The driver on Washington left the scene of the accident but his or her contribution to this wreck is yet to be determined.

Police officers on the scene of the accident investigate the owner of a plate believed to have belonged to the hit and run driver (numbers from the plate have been removed to protect the innocent.)
